THE JUDICIARY

This is the arm of institution of government responsible for the interpretation of laws. It is seen as the last hope of the common man. It is made up of judges and all the courts and other law adjudicating agencies. Members of the judiciary are appointed on the recommendation of the Judicial Service Commission.

Functions of the Judiciary

The judiciary interprets laws.
Resolves disputes between arms of government and between citizens or among citizens.
Applies sanctions and punishments to the law breakers.
Hears and determines election petitions.
Engage in judicial reviews to determine the constitutionality of legislation and executive decisions, this power is exercised by the Supreme Court.
Perform legislative function i.e. case laws that are cited as precedent.
