After a six-month break following “Tipsy”, Odunsi (The Engine) finally put out some new music last Friday. Surprising fans with a double release — the WANI-assisted “Better Days” and “Wetin Dey” — Odunsi is back with more surprises, dropping one video for both tracks.
Directed by Ademola Falomo (Rema’s “Dumebi”) and Odunsi himself, “Wetin Dey” and “Better Days” share the same music video but have juxtaposing moods — according to the character of each song. Odunsi explains this decision to The Fader, saying:
“I had to shoot two videos because I like both songs [equally]”
The compound music video begins with the spritely track, “Wetin Dey”, upon which Odunsi ventures on a night out with his boys. The song is awarded a colourful music video that shows Odunsi and his friends fooling around in a studio. The imaginative singer outlines his concept:
“With ‘Wetin Dey’ I wanted to express the youth in Lagos going out and having fun”
As we’ve come to learn, Odunsi is a pretty nostalgic artist, bringing vintage styles into his videos and classic tunes into his music. So while the track itself samples Ruff Rugged & Raw, the music video for “Wetin Dey” takes inspiration from Will Smith’s 1991 “Summertime” video.
The P2J-produced “Better Days”, which features WANI, is the second video to be portrayed. On the track, Odunsi longs to get away from the difficult Nigerian environment, as well as the toxic people who give him shit for being himself.
Giving these three minutes a darker theme, “Better Days” depicts the aftermath of Odunsi killing somebody, fleeing the scene with his female accomplice. WANI, who shines on the bouncy beat, plays the role of a passer-by as he croons his verse.
