Peter Mbah, governor of Enugu, on Monday, monitored business activities in the state.

The governor met with traders and civil servants who defied the sit-at-home order.

In a series of tweets, Mbah posted pictures and videos of him interacting with the workers.

Today, I went round Enugu metropolis to urge our people to come out and go about their various businesses,” Mbah wrote.

“Ndi Enugu will not continue to sit at home on Monday, the first working day of the week. We should not encourage the crippling of our economy but must work to ensure it is revived.”

The Monday sit-at-home order was introduced by the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to protest the detention of Kanu, its leader.

Although the separatist group suspended the sit-at-home in September 2021, there have been reports of forceful, and sometimes violent enforcement of the order by suspected thugs, grounding Monday business activities in some parts of the south-east region.

Last week, Mbah said sit-at-home would no longer take place in any “nook and cranny” of the state, adding that the government would “dialogue with people who have genuine grievances towards bringing lasting peace and security” to the state.

Speaking after the monitoring exercise, Mbah said the aim of his visitations was “largely to observe the level of compliance of the directive that we gave last week, declaring that we do not have sit-at-home in Enugu henceforth”.

The governor said the directive was “meant to ensure that our people come out on the first working and productive day of the week”.

He added that the level of compliance with the directive is about 60 to 70 percent.
