April 02, (THEWILL) – Valentine Obienyem, media aide to the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has stated that the leaked phone conversation between Obi and Bishop David Oyedepo, the founder of Living Faith Church, aka Winners Chapel, is allegedly aimed at incriminating and subsequently prosecuting Obi for treason.
Obienyem made the claim on Sunday, hours after an alleged phone conversation between the LP candidate and Bishop Oyedepo surfaced online.
While members of the Obi campaign organization have issued conflicting statements regarding the alleged leaked phone call in their initial responses, Obienyem claimed that some unnamed persons have been assigned the task of harvesting and reviewing wiretapped phone calls of Obi in the last three years to find something incriminating to prosecute the LP candidate for treason.
“Obi versus Oyedepo: Too bad, I heard they set up a committee made up of some communication experts, headed by our prodigal brother from Nnewi. They are reviewing all calls Obi made in the last three years, especially now, to see if he mentioned interim government or anything that will make them prosecute him for treason when and if they take over.
“Till now, they are yet to see any. The badly doctored conversation with Bishop Oyedepo released by our Nnewi prodigal brother is the most they have discovered so far. They edited the Muslim-Muslim ticket that led to the discussion, where Obi said that in a society like ours, religious balancing was a necessary consideration and that their recklessness had made Christians to assume it was a religious war,” he wrote.
Recall that Oyedepo had also responded to the leaked audio between him and Obi. His comment came amid criticism trailing the alleged audio conversation.
In the viral clip, a voice similar to that of Obi was heard asking the cleric to speak to the Christians in the south-west and Kwara to vote for him in the presidential poll, describing the election as a religious war.
Some supporters of Obi had first described the audio as fake. But, Kenneth Okonkwo, the presidential spokesperson of the Labour party, revealed the clip is authentic.
He, however, claimed that political criminals are trying to spin the conversation as if the LP candidate was making a religious comment.
“First, the context of the conversation was aptly put by Bishop Oyedepo when he said ‘All Nigerians have equal stake in this nation, nobody has the right to claim that he is dashing something to someone’.
“H E @PeterObi was simply urging the Bishop to help him push this message of equal stake of all Nigerians in the Nigerians project to his people and the Christendom because the politicians of the other party are carrying on this campaign as if it is a religious war.
“To drive home this point, he informed him that he visited the traditional ruler of Offa, the Olofa of Offa, who is a Muslim, but he advised Obi to get the support of Oyedepo and be assured of his own support. No politician has ever visited the Olofa of Offa. It is clear to everybody that the APC political party that has a presidential candidate, vice presidential candidate, Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, National Chairman of the Party, all from one religion at a time the CJN is a Muslim, is the Party that has declared religious war on Nigerians and we must all rise up together to fight their unconstitutional act or religious intolerance of the other religions by APC,” he wrote.
Addressing his congregation on Sunday, Oyedepo had stated that he will not campaign for anyone till he goes to heaven.
“Nobody had ever told me what to say in this world. No, I have never campaigned for anybody or spoken on anybody’s behalf and I will not do that till I go to heaven.
“There is no political party in this country that didn’t come to me for prayers and advice. I advised them, but some didn’t take it. Those who chose to take it, they have seen results. Those who said no, they are going about it. If you still come again, I will still tell you, it doesn’t change,” Oyedepo said.
