As part of measures towards promoting sanity and safer society, the Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a resolution calling on security agencies and other appropriate government agencies to check the illegal use of official number plate and siren by unauthorised persons in all parts of the State.

Consequently, it has directed security agencies and appropriate government agencies to step up measures towards enforcing the law to curb the indiscriminate and unlawful use of the number plate and siren in the State.

The passage of the resolution followed a motion moved by a member representing Ogun Waterside State Constituency, Hon. Akeem Balogun, seconded by his Sagamu II counterpart,  Hon. Ademola Adeniran and supported by the Whole House through a voice vote at a plenary presided over by Speaker Olakunle Oluomo at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Contributing to the debate leading to the motion, members including Adegoke Adeyanju, Bolanle Ajayi and Oludaisi Elemide, said it became imperative for security agencies to checkmate the illegal usage of official number plates by unauthorised persons,  particularly ex-political office holders in the State and Local Government Councils as well as other unauthorised individuals.

Calling for immediate action on the part of security agencies, the lawmakers added that unlawful usage of the siren and the coverage of number plate could be used to perpetrate crimes in the society, which could bring the State into disrepute.

Meanwhile, Speaker Oluomo had earlier  announced the composition of a -nine-man Selection Committee of the Assembly to include himself as the Chairman, his Deputy, Oludare Kadiri as Vice Chairman and other members of the Committee to include the Majority Leader Sheriff Yusuf, Chief Whip Atinuke Bello, Minority Leader Ganiyu Oyedeji, Minority Whip Jemili Akingbade, Yusuf Adejojo, Bolanle Lateefat Ajayi and Olakunle Sobukanla.

The Speaker stated that the composition of the Committee was in line with the Assembly’s standing order and urged Committee to submit its report within one week.

Also, the Speaker urged residents of the State to desist from dumping refuse in drainage channels to avoid flooding as Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) had forecast and sent warning signals on impending heavy rains in the weeks ahead, which could cause flash floods in some States.

He equally admonished parents to monitor the movements of their wards to and from school during this rainy season to avoid being victim of flooding.
