Following the devastating fire that destroyed much of Notre Dame on Monday night and Tuesday morning, donations to rebuild the cathedral have flooded in. However, some are calling for the wealthy to reconsider their generosity.
On Tuesday, Forbes reported that French billionaires, including François-Henri Pinault, the Arnault family, and the Bettencourt Meyers family, have donated a total of $680 million to the rebuild.
Other donations have come streaming in from French corporates. French oil giant Total has said it will contribute €100 million ($113 million). JCDecaux, the French outdoor advertising group and French bank Société Générale have pledged €20 million ($22 million) and €10 million ($11 million) respectively. Apple, the world’s wealthiest company, has also said it will be contributing to the rebuild of Notre Dame.
