Ex-Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II
The dust over the dethronement of Muhammad Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje may not have settled as Kano Elders have vowed to challenge what it described as the brazen acts of illegality perpetrated by the government of the state in court.
Recall that on Monday, the governor, in a press statement read by the secretary of the state government, Usman Alhaji, had dethroned Mr Sanusi as the emir of Kano over what he described as the emir’s total disrespect to the provisions of the Kano Emirate Law.
The emir, according to the SSG, was persistently refusing to attend official meetings and programmes organized by the state government without any lawful justification which amount to total insubordination.
In a statement signed on Monday, the chairman of the elders’ group, Bashir Othman-Tofa described the dethronement as sad, unfortunate and illegal.
The chairman, however, called on the people of the state to stay calm, and not to resort to any violent reaction whatsoever.
“We, ADVOCATES FOR A UNITED KANO, have received with utter shock and disbelief the statement read by the Secretary to Kano State Government, announcing the removal of His Highness Muhammad Sanusi ll, as Emir of Kano.
“In view of this sad, unfortunate and illegal dethronemment of the Emir by Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the ADVOCATES call on all Kanawa and residents of Kano State and beyond to stay calm, and not to resort to any violent reaction whatsoever. Violence is no solution to anything, for no one can predict where it may lead to.
“We absolutely believe in whatever Allah (subhanaHu wa Ta’ala) ordained, and we put our complete trust in Him, for He Has power over all things,” the statement read in part.
The group, therefore, vowed to challenge what it described as the brazen acts of illegality perpetrated by the government of the state.
“Be that as it may, the ADVOCATES FOR A UNITED KANO shall continue to challenge, by lawful and peaceful means, each and every brazen act of illegality perpetrated by the Government of Kano State.
“In particular we have vowed to sustain our judicial challenge to the unlawful Law passed by the Kano House of Assembly under which the Governor purportedly removed the Emir,” the statement added.
