Muhammad Sanusi II removed as Emir of Kano

A former lawmaker who represented Kaduna Central in the Senate, Shehu Sani, has reacted to the dethronement of Muhammad Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano.

Recall that the Kano State government-led by Abdullahi Ganduje on Monday, March 9, dethroned Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II.

A statement by Alhaji Usman Alhaji, the Secretary to the Kano State Government, said Emir Sanusi’s dethronement was due to his “total disrespect to lawful instructions from the office of the governor and other lawful authorities.”

The government noted that “the Emir of Kano is in total disrespect to lawful instructions from the office of the governor and other lawful authorities, including his persistent refusal to attend officials meetings and programmes organised by the government without any lawful justification which amount to total insubordination.

“It is on record and in so many instances Malam Muhammad Sanusi II has been found breaching part 3, section 13 (a-e) of the Kano State Emirate Law 2019 and which if left unchecked will destroy the good and established image of the Kano Emirate.

“This removal is made after due consultation with the relevant stakeholders and in compliance with part 3, section 13 of the Kano State Emirate Law 2019 and other reasons stated above.

“The removal was reached in order to safeguard the sanctity, culture, tradition, religion and prestige of the Kano Emirate built over a thousand years.

Reacting to the removal of the Emir from office, Senator Sani noted on Twitter that the action revealed the “intolerance and toxicity of the liquor of power.”

“The removal of Emir Sanusi represents the incompatibility of the crown and conscience, the consequences of dissent against established norms and the heavy price of holding principles in our north. It also revealed the intolerance and toxicity of the liquor of power.”

He Further accused the Northern elders’ peacekeeping team of failing in their attempt to reconcile the warring parties.

“The Northern Elders Peacekeeping force led by General Abdulsalam sent to enforce a ceasefire and restore peace in the Civil war between the forces of the Emir and that of the Governor failed in their mission; And they quietly withdrew unannounced, leaving behind an escalation.”

It will be recalled the Senator had earlier appealed to Governor Ganduje to forgive the Emir and allow peace reign in the ancient city of Kano.
