A woman and four children died in Dauni village of Minjibir local government area of Kano state while excavating sand.
The sad incident happened when the tunnel where they were excavating the sand collapsed.
The Kano State Fire Service Spokesperson Malam Sai’idu Mohammed, identified the victims as 32-year-old Sa’ida Lawwali, 8-year-old Dije Shu’aibu, Hadiza Shu’aibu and Nana Idris who are both aged 12 and finally, Wasila Nuhu who is 13 years old.
A 4-year-old boy Ibrahim Shuaibu was reportedly rescued from the site with injuries along with other survivors who are currently receiving treatment in various hospitals.
The women and children were reportedly excavating white sand which is used for make-up powder. The site is popular for having a particular variety of white sand which is used to produce makeup powder for women.
A resident of the village Abdulkadir Hassan, called on the government to regulate sand excavation and mining activities in the area and also educate the women on safety standards.
