The Minister of State for Labour and Productivity, Festus Keywmo has commended the Supreme Court over its Judgement on the November 2019 governorship election in Bayelsa State.
The Supreme Court had on Thursday sacked David Lyon of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who was initially declared winner of the election.
David Lyon’s election victory was nullified because his running mate, Biobarakuma Degi-Eremienyo, presented a forged certificate to the INEC.
The Apex Court held that since Degi-Eremieoyo shared a joint ticket with the David Lyon, his disqualification invalidated their election.
The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Douye Diri, who came second in the election, was handed over the victory.
Reacting to the development on his Twitter page, Keyamo commended the Supreme Court on its judgements and called on the APC to sit back and solve its internal issues.
“The Supreme Court has been firm and resolute so far regarding pre-election cases and Election Petitions. I commend their lordships,” he wrote.
“As a party, we have to look at our own internal party mechanisms that make us give our victories needlessly away to the opposition and take appropriate actions.”
Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday morning had issued a certificate of return to Douye Diri in compliance with the Supreme Court’s ruling and the PDP candidate was sworn in as new Bayelsa governor on Friday evening.
