An 18-year-old Nigerian Student, Oluwafemi Oyerinde of the Kennesaw State University in Georgia, was shot dead by his neighbour after they reportedly got into a heated argument over loud music.
Oyerinde, who was a freshman studying mechanical engineering at the school, was reportedly killed outside his Stadium Village apartment shortly after 11:30 a.m. Sunday, October 6, 2019.
The family of the 18-year-old student believes that the shooting was because of an argument on Friday night, over loud music.
The Cobb County Police Department has arrested Kashman Rael Thomas for killing 18-year-old Oyerinde, and shooting two other people who survived the incident at the Stadium Village apartment complex.
The two other people who were also shot and wounded that day are, 18-year-old Khalil Bennett and 18-year-old Jarius Bonner.
The CCPD is charging Thomas with murder and two counts each of aggravated assault.
Investigators also discovered 159 grams of what they suspected to be marijuana in Thomas’ room after a search was conducted. Thomas was also charged with possessing over an ounce of marijuana, according to the AJC.
KSU spokeswoman Tammy Demel also confirmed in a statement that Oyerinda was a KSU student.
“It is with profound sadness that the University confirms the deceased victim, 18-year-old Oluwafemi Oyerinde, was an enrolled student at Kennesaw State University,” Demel said.
On Monday, October 14, a student-led candlelight vigil was held for Oyerinde at the Legacy Gazebo on the Kennesaw campus.
Meanwhile, Taraba State University (TSU) has expelled a first-year student after he repeatedly criticized the state governor, Darius Ishaku, on Facebook.
Joseph Israel, a student of Laboratory Science, was expelled for using his Facebook page to deliver blistering criticisms of Mr. Ishaku’s leadership.
