Issa Rae is clearly the gift that keeps on giving. While we’re not really over the fact that we won’t be getting a new season of Insecure this year, she’s making up for it by executive producing a new comedy sketch show, A Black Lady Sketch Show.
With a star-studded cast that includes Issa herself, Yvonne Orji, Angela Basset, Tia Mowry, Lena Waithe, Maisai Martin and many more of our black television faves, it looks like we’re certainly in for a treat.
Earlier this year, HBO ordered the already existing sketch show, which was created by comedian, Robin Thede. From the first trailer, it’s clear that A Black Lady Sketch Show will be breaking new ground in sketch comedy TV, and we’re understandably hyped.
The show is described as a “narrative series set in a limitless magical reality full of dynamic, hilarious characters”, and it will be made up of sketches performed by a core cast of black women (Robin Thede, Ashley Nicole Black, Gabrielle Dennis and Quinta Brunson), as well as a number of celebrity guests.
In the trailer, Nigerian-American star, Yvonne Orji (Insecure) shines, as she plays an air hostess, who is trying to attend to a troublesome couple on the plane, while Angela Basset (Black Panther) and Laverne Cox (Orange Is The New Black) attend a Bad Bitch Support Group.
The show is set to premiere on August 2, and we can’t wait.
