Emdee Tiamiyu, a Nigerian-UK based YouTuber, has landed in trouble with British government following a controversial interview with the BBC.
Last year, Emdee Tiamiyu faced significant backlash after being likened to ‘Judas Iscariot’ for allegedly ‘selling out’ Nigerians to the UK government.
In the BBC interview, Emdee Tiamiyu claimed that some Nigerians seeking migration to the UK utilize education as a deceptive means to gain entry into the country through student visas.
He highlighted that for some people, the educational aspect of the course was secondary, with their primary focus being on using it as a pathway to start a new life in the UK.
Emdee Tiamiyu’s remarks sparked outrage among Nigerians, who accused him of betrayal and labeled him as ‘Judas’ for selling out his country men to the UK government.
Moreover, Emdee Tiamiyu’s interview with the BBC led to policy changes by the UK government regarding Nigerian students bringing their families to the UK.
In May 23, 2023, the UK government announced that Nigerians and other international students would no longer be permitted to bring family members or dependents while pursuing a Master’s degree program, excluding PhD students.
Furthermore, in an effort to prevent visa system abuse, the UK implemented new rules effective January 2024, which abolished the ability for overseas students to switch from student visas to employment routes before completing their studies.
In a recent development, Emdee Tiamiyu was reportedly arrested for fraud, as he allegedly has financial matters to address with the UK government.
