The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has issued a stern warning to Yoruba activist Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, cautioning against unilateral actions against bandits in the South West without involving the military and other security agencies.
Sunday Igboho recently urged his supporters not to wait for government intervention but to take steps themselves to combat the Fulani herders causing havoc and preventing local farmers from accessing their land in the Southwest. He threatened to deal with them now that his mother was gone.
In response to Igboho’s call, the DHQ emphasized that any action taken without the involvement of security agencies would be deemed unconstitutional.
Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, the spokesman for Defence Media Operations, stated, “If what he said is to make the situation better, he is welcomed, but if what he is saying is that we should disregard the armed forces of Nigeria, definitely, he is out of line because that is against Nigeria’s constitution.”
He commended Igboho for his bravery and assured him of the military’s willingness to cooperate if his intentions aimed to enhance the country’s security situation.
“I have not seen the video where he made that statement, but one thing I must say is that people and communities are always welcome. If what he said is to make the situation better, he is welcomed, but if what he is saying is that we should disregard the armed forces of Nigeria, definitely, he is out of line because that is against Nigeria’s constitution,” he reiterated.
