KanyiDaily had reported that the NLC members had nationwide protests on Wednesday, August 2, over the removal of fuel subsidy and the subsequent hike in petrol prices, among other grievances.

Led by the Organised Labour leaders, Joe Ajaero of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Festus Osifo of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) had asked the security operatives stationed at the National Assembly to open the gates, allowing them to express their grievances peacefully.

However, when their request was denied, the angry protesters took matters into their own hands and forcefully brought down the gates. With solidarity songs resonating in the air, they proceeded to enter the assembly complex, expressing their dissatisfaction with the current situation.

As the protesters gathered within the premises of the national assembly, the security personnel remained vigilant, closely monitoring the situation which has continued to gain momentum.

KanyiDaily recalls that in his inaugural address on May 29, President Bola Tinubu declared an end to the petrol subsidy regime, which immediately led to a surge in petrol prices and subsequent price increases in transportation, causing a significant impact on the cost of living and inflation rates.
