Former Prelate of Methodist Church Nigeria and President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Sunday Mbang, is dead. The first black president of World Methodist Council, died in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on Tuesday night, in his sleep at 86 years.
In a statement announcing the demise, secretary of the Methodist Conference, Babatunde Taiwo said Mbang “died after an impactful earthly ministry of 44 years, having enrolled at the Trinity College, Umuahia, Abia State in 1962.” He said the late Mbang was the only person to be both a patriarch and prelate of the church.
REACTING, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, in a condolence message, issued by his Chief Press Secretary/Special Assistant (Media), Ekerete Udoh, said the passing is “deeply painful, but we thank God for the life of impact you (Mbang) lived.”
Prelate of the church, Dr. Oliver Ali Aba, while describing the departed as a fearless man, vocal and voice of the voiceless, submitted: “He was someone loved and celebrated by the people home and abroad. While alive, he was fearless and vocal.”
