IPOB: IEP’s 2022 terrorism index report faulty

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has faulted last year’s Global Terrorism Index Report of the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP).

The mainly southeast-based organisation described the report as a conspiracy between the Federal Government of Nigeria and some foreign agencies to blackmail and demonise its (IPOB’s) activists globally.

In its latest report, the IEP said IPOB ranked the world’s 10th deadliest terror group.

But in a statement yesterday, the separatist movement’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, said it was disappointing for a reputable organisation, such as IEP, to publish what he called fictional and inaccurate account in its terrorism index report.

“It’s very disappointing that a reputable organisation, such as Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), a United State-based institute that has been given measurable global terrorism index, will descend so low to publish fictional and inaccurate accounts in their 2022 terrorism index report…”

“In the IEP’s Terrorism Index Report of 2022, the current Nigerian Government was cleverly portrayed as having improved in counter-terrorism while in reality the terrorists have become more emboldened during the period.”

Powerful added: “This is a concocted falsehood. In one state, such as Benue State alone, the Fulani-sponsored terrorists have killed more than 400 civilians. The report, as it relates to Nigeria, showed a full script from the Nigerian Government handed over to the institute for publication.”

In the same report, IPOB was mentioned as the third violent group that has caused civilians’ deaths.

“We challenge IEP to present irrefutable evidence where IPOB killed any person in Nigeria. On the contrary, there are many verifiable evidences, both in the print and social media, on the massacre and extrajudicial killings of many IPOB members by Nigeria’s security agencies since 2017…”
