During a town hall meeting with Igbo traders in Port Harcourt, Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State declared Peter Obi of the Labour Party as the hero of the recently concluded presidential election.
Despite not being declared the winner, Obi’s participation ensured the emergence of a Southerner as the President-elect, Wike said. The governor, who is one of the five PDP governors known as G5 and refused to support their party’s presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, claimed that if Obi had not contested, power would have remained in the North.
Wike urged the traders to ignore negative comments and vote for the PDP in the upcoming governorship and state assembly elections.
He denied allegations of working against Obi’s presidential bid and explained that he did not openly endorse a presidential candidate because of his agreement with the other aggrieved governors, stating that a united region was crucial after the election.
Wike took a tour of the phone and computer market at Garrison junction, addressed their concerns and donated 30 plots of land for their ICT village project. He also granted the traders’ request for 150 plots of land for the building of their market during his visit to Mile 3 Market.
