THE Zamfara State House of Assembly yesterday received from its Deputy Speaker, Musa Bawa, a document seeking the impeachment of Deputy Governor, Mahdi Aliyu.

It is the latest move by the assembly to get rid of Aliyu, who is locked in a battle with Governor Bello Matawalle.

The deputy governor had refused, last June, to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) with the governor and most members of the state House of Assembly.

Mr Bawa, who doubles as Chairman of the House Committee on Public Account, moved a motion for the consideration of the request.

Speaker Muazu Magarya said the assembly would “treat the document in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).”

The first attempt to impeach Aliyu was quashed in July by the Federal High Court, Abuja, which restrained the assembly and the Chief Judge of the state from taking steps to impeach him.

The deputy had incurred the wrath of the assemblymen by addressing a political rally soon after the defection of his principal.

The lawmakers said the rally, coming in the heat of mass abductions and killings by bandits in the state, was insensitive.
