A former minister of commerce and industry, Jubril Martins-Kuye, has died on Sunday morning at his residence at Victoria Garden City, Lagos State.
Martins-Kuye, who clocked 80 on August 16, 2020, was confirmed dead on Sunday by one of his children, Bolaji, according to PUNCH.
He said: “I can confirm to you that he passed on about 10:05 this morning. It was a painful loss to us, but, we give glory to God for the impactful life that he lived while he was alive because he touched the lives of many people.
“He died at 80 in his residence at Victoria Garden City, Lagos. We are about to convey his remains to his home town where he would be hopefully interred by 4 pm, according to Islamic rites.”
Martins-Kuye served as Minister of State for Finance in the government of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, and was appoitned Minister of Commerce and Industry by former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2010.
Born on August 16, 1942 in Ago-Iwoye in Ogun State, Martins-Kuye studied Sociology at the University of Ibadan and Economics at the Harvard University Business School. He later qualified as a chartered accountant.
In the aborted Third Republic, Martins-Kuye was a member of the defunct Social Democratic Party and served as Senator on its platform.
The late politician was one of the founding leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party. He flew the governorship flag of the party in Ogun State in 1999 before he joined former President Obasanjo’s cabinet.
