If you are reading this, you probably know all about the SHL tests and how important they are to your job! In fact, if you are pursuing a career path that requires you to take this test, then it’s a pretty big deal. You need to make sure that you get the best possible score, as this will reflect on you for the life of your role at the organization

For example, if you are being considered for a managerial role or promotion, you might find that your old scores are referenced. If not referenced, then the hiring manager will at least be aware of them, and that could sway every decision going forward. Getting the best possible score, every time, should definitely be your goal when it comes to approaching the SHL tests. That said, these tests can be a bit challenging if you’re not familiar with them and what they entail. That’s why we’re here to help you review the content, understand what you need to prepare for and get ready to go. After all, you want the best possible chance of success, right?

So, How to SHL Tests Even Work?

Well, there are many different SHL tests, but for the purpose of this article, we’re really going to focus on their ability, aptitude and cognitive tests. After all, these are definitely the most common styles of tests offered around the workplace, and you are more likely to run into them. Also, while their personality test isn’t anything to sneeze at, it does take less preparation, simply because you probably already have a good idea about your personality, and you can’t technically fail that test.

But you can fail the rest of the SHL tests! How can you fail these tests? Well, if you fall below average in your cohort (everyone who took the test with you), then you probably won’t make it  to interviews with your potential employer. You need to get the best possible score to show that you are a cut above the rest and that you can handle the demands and stress of the job at hand. If you can demonstrate this, you’ll absolutely succeed when it comes to test-day!

 Practice Your Content!

Okay, this probably goes without saying, but please don’t underestimate the  importance and impact of practicing, practicing, practicing. You need to be as familiar as possible with every aspect of the content in front of you, if you want to succeed. After all, if you don’t practice, then all of the revision won’t do you any good. What types of questions are asked? How long do you have to answer? How fast does it feel when you’re going through questions and do you really understand what is being asked? This test is known for having plenty of red herrings and other abstract ideas, that can throw you off quickly, and make it harder to answer the questions accurately and quickly. That’s why practicing is such a critical part of the process. It makes a huge difference, so make sure that you practice, practice, practice!

Brush up on Numeracy and Verbal Skills!

When you are going about your daily life an adult, you probably don’t pay a lot of attention to the math that you learned in school, right? It might seem outdated or unimportant and you don’t always spend a lot of time using it. That’s why you absolutely have to brush up on those skills before you go into the test. This can make all of the difference between a pass or a fail, so don’t skip this step no matter how boring and tedious it may feel.

The same goes for your verbal reasoning skills. You need to make sure you are great at answering comprehension style questions and that you understand subtleties and nuances in language and can accurately and quickly express these differences. They can make all of the difference when it comes to passing or failing, so invest time reviewing algebra, speech and other nuances that you haven’t looked at since high school. Your score will thank you for it!
