The tennis star admitted she should have taken a break after the unfortunate incident.
The Belarusian star expressed her heartbreak at the time but decided to continue competing in the tournament.
However, the emotional strain soon took its toll on her physical health as her campaign at the French Open was derailed by illness, and she later was forced to withdraw from Wimbledon due to a shoulder injury.
Reflecting on her decision to push through instead of taking a break, Sabalenka now acknowledged it was a mistake.
“Looking back, I definitely think that I should have just stopped and separated myself from tennis, just have a little break, recharge, and start things over again,” Sabalenka said as quoted by Skysports.
“I think I overplayed and carried a lot. In the end, it just hit me with the injury, and I was also sick. Health-wise, I was struggling a lot, and that’s why I think this break was much needed.”
After finally stepping away from the sport to recover, Sabalenka made a triumphant return by winning the Cincinnati Open.
Now, she is setting her sights on the US Open, which begins on Monday.
“I’m not happy to have been injured, but I’m happy that I had this time off to reset my mind and get ready for the hard court,” the 2023 US Open runner-up added. “This year has shown me that there’s always room to improve mentally, and I believe I’ll come out even stronger.”
