Michael Olise marked an impressive with an assist as France edged Argentina 1-0 in the quarter-finals of the men’s football event of the Paris Olympic games on Friday.
Olise’s former Crystal Palace teammate Jean-Philippe Mateta was the hero as he netted the only goal that sent the host Into the semis.
Mateta broke the deadlock just five minutes into the game as he lost his marker to head home a well taken corner by Olise.
With five minutes left Olise thought he had doubled France’s lead but his effort was ruled out for offside.
France will now take on Egypt in the semi-finals of this summer’s Olympic games.
The Egyptians progressed into a first-ever semi-finals appearance thanks to a 5-4 penalty shootout win against Paraguay after regulation time ended 1-1.
Another African team, Morocco, also booked a place into the semi-finals following a comfortable 4-0 win against USA also on Friday.
The Moroccans will take on Spain in the semi-finals, after the Europeans saw off Japan 3-0..
