As the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) draws closer, teams that have already qualified for the tournament are tying up loose ends to see that they have an excellent outing in Egypt, and Nigeria isn’t left out.
Recently, Super Eagles fans have been worried about Mikel Obi’s place on the team, and who is going to take the number 10 position if he isn’t available for the tournament.
Nigeria coach, Gernot Rohr is very much aware of the concerns and, according to Daily Trust, he just made it clear that there are other players who have what it takes to take that spot. In fact, he named Alex Iwobi, Ahmed Musa and Oghenekaro Etebo as worthy replacements.
Obi is unarguably the most experienced player we have on the team right now. He has been a Super Eagles player since 2006 — well over a decade — and that’s enough reason for him to take a break from international football.
Whether that happens or not, the number 10 position on the team is well covered. After all, Iwobi didn’t disappoint as number 10 when Nigeria played against South Africa in Joburg; Musa is currently the playmaker for his club, Al Nassr; and, so far, Etebo is giving Stoke City value for their money.
So, we should just look forward to the tournament without worries.
