Charles Okpaleke’s “Living In Bondage: Breaking Free” was the biggest winner of the night with a total of seven awards, at the just concluded 7th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Award, AMVCA, held at the Eko expo hall, Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.
‘Living in Bondage’ secured 7 awards out of 11 nominations including Best Overall Movie, Best Movie West Africa, Best Director, Best Writer in a Movie among others.
‘Elevator Baby’ followed with 3 wins and ‘God Calling’ came close with 2 wins. The industry merit award went to seasoned TV and filmmaker, Peter Igho.
Ramsey Nouah, who made his directional debut, went home with the award for Best Director. While Jide Kene ( Swanky JKA) won Trailblazer Award.
Living In Bondage is the third installment in the Nollywood legacy franchise of the same title and is a sequel to the well-acclaimed Nollywood movie, Living in Bondage.
The movie focuses on a young couple’s struggle with love, betrayal, suffering, and redemption. The forgotten son of Andy Okeke from the original film. Nnamdi, like his father, desires the finer things of life, but unfortunately, he can’t afford them. That changed after an encounter with billionaire Richard Williams, who hands him the key to the good life, but at a cost.
The film was both a critical and commercial success – it grossed over ₦163 million, and critics praised both Nouah’s directing and lead actor Swanky Jka’s performance.
One of the biggest snubs for the night was ‘King of Boys’ with no wins.
For the special category, the Best Dressed Male and Best Dressed Female went to Mike Edwards and Mercy Eke of the just concluded Big Brother Naija season 4.
On-air personality, IK Osakioduwa was the host, alongside a new female co-host, Kenya’s Amina Abdi Rabar.
The AMVCA is a merit award w by Multichoice through Africa Magic for the lifetime contribution to the development of African cinema. Its first edition was held on 9th March 2013 at Eko Hotel And Suites and subsequent events have always been held at the same venue.
