Wizkid is one of the most popular artists out of Nigeria, thanks to collaborations with the likes of Beyoncé and Drake. So, it comes as no surprise that he has made history as the first African artist to reach 8 million monthly listeners on the music streaming giant, Spotify.
Nigerian artists have been gaining a lot of traction recently. This year alone, Davido became the first African artist to have a video reach 100 million views on YouTube, Burna Boy made history on the UK charts with African Giant, and now, Wizkid has become Spotify’s most visible African artist.
While he still hasn’t dropped an official single this year — he’s been teasing the Northboi-produced “Joro”, as well as his next body of work, Made In Lagos — his standout collabs with stars like GoldLink, Kojo Funds and Skepta have kept him well in the conversation.
Hopefully, seeing how his fanbase keeps growing will spur him on to satiate fans with some new music really soon. Also, with the success of Nigerian artists on the platform, perhaps Spotify will also make their service available in Nigeria for even more fans to access Wizkid’s music.
