Japan defender Risa Shimizu will play no further part at this year’s Paris Olympic after suffering an injury.

City confirmed the injury to their Japanese star in a statement on Friday.

Shimizu suffered the injury during Japan’s opening Group C game against world champion Spain which her team lost 2-1.

With Japan down 2-1 Shimizu had to be stretched off the pitch.

“We can confirm that Risa Shimizu suffered a knee injury during Japan’s 2-1 loss to Spain in their first game at Paris 2024 on Thursday 25 July.

“Risa will return to the City Football Academy for further assessment by the Club’s medical team.”

Shimizu is now ruled out of Japan’s games against Brazil and Nigeria’s Super Falcons.

On Thursday the Falcons marked their return to the Olympics with a 1-0 loss to Brazil.

A Gabi Nunes first half goal secured the win for the two-time Olympic silver medal winners.
