The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on the National Assembly to place a ban on buying cars for lawmakers until 2023.

SERAP urged the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila to sponsor a resolution banning the purchase of cars for lawmakers till 2023.

The call is sequel to a decision by the Namibian President to ban top politicians and government officials in his country from purchasing new cars for the next five years.

In a series of tweets, SERAP also urged the leadership of the National Assembly to suspend plans to renovate the National Assembly.

The body stressed that funds meant for these projects should be channeled towards improving Nigeria’s healthcare and educational system.

SERAP tweeted:

“Following reports today that Namibia has banned top politicians and government officials from buying new cars for the next 5 years, we’re calling on @DrAhmadLawan @femigbaja to urgently sponsor a joint resolution banning @nassnigeria from buying new cars until 2023.

“We’re also calling on them to suspend any plans to buy new cars and to renovate the National Assembly.

“The public funds derived from this initiative should be used to improve access to quality healthcare and education.

“This is one excellent idea to copy from abroad.”
