Davido‘s music is currently being enjoyed all over the world, and he’s barely dropped the ball since his breakout. Over time, he’s amassed a rather impressive catalogue, with a malleable sound that allows him the opportunity to successfully test out different genres.

With varied international collaborations — from Young Thug to Rudimental — it comes as no shock that the afropop juggernaut is influenced by a wide selection of musicians, and we can see it in the way he seamlessly samples songs from different genres on his biggest hits.

The way he pulls off the samples shows off his incredible ear, and almost every song is recognisable immediately. This certainly makes his music even more enjoyable, and so, as we await a new jam from him, here is a list of 8 songs he’s sampled in his catalogue

“If” (“Yeah” – Usher, “Gra Gra” – Lagbaja)

“If” was the song that kicked off Davido’s 2017 renaissance, and his career is still currently benefitting from it. With a subtle sampling of Usher 2004 hit, “Yeah”, the song’s catchy hook certainly became a chant, and it also sees people revisiting Lagbaja’s iconic “Gra Gra”.

“Fall” – (“Dun Talking” – Kojo Funds , “Still Not A Player” – Big Pun)

On “Fall”, Davido declared it was cuffing season, announcing that he didn’t want to be a player no more. The next year, he went public with his relationship with the massive hit, “Assurance”, showing Big Pun influenced him in more ways than one with that line.

“Mind” – (“Caught Up” – Usher)

Last year, Davido got the biggest stars of his record label together — Mayorkun, Dremo and Peruzzi —  for a joint love song, where each artists’ declaration of love ended with a cheeky sample of Usher’s equally doting song, “Caught Up”.

“The Money” – (“Alowo Majaye” – Ebenezer Obey)

Much like the sampled song, the fuji-influenced “The Money” is a party tune that beckons for listeners to live their best lives. Davido being able to work it to suit an afropop sound, certainly serves as an indicator of just how timeless Ebenezer Obey’s work is.

“Nwa Baby “- (“Locked Up” – Akon)

Although Davido’s songs bang more often than not, it would be a stretch to call him an astute lyricist. On “Nwa Baby”, he manages to make up for this by incorporating memorable lyrics from one of Akon’s best-writtem songs, “Locked Up”.

“Assurance” – (“Don’t Be Afraid” – Heavy D)

When Davido dropped “Assurance”, he basically broke the internet with his blatant display of affection towards his lover, Chioma. He started off the monster hit by serenading her with a sample of the sweet lyrics of Heavy D’s “Don’t Be Afraid”, à la Paw Paw.
