Renowned Argentine footballer Lionel Messi recently delved into the topic of retirement during an interview on the Big Time Podcast, offering insights into his future plans as he navigates the latter stages of his career.
Since his move to Inter Miami in the summer of 2023, Messi has made significant contributions, tallying 16 goals and seven assists in 19 appearances across various competitions. However, at 36 years old, he has faced challenges with injuries, raising questions about his longevity in the sport.
In discussing his retirement considerations, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner highlighted his self-awareness, acknowledging his propensity for critical self-assessment. Messi emphasized his willingness to step away from football when he feels unable to maintain peak performance levels or derive joy from playing, regardless of his age.
“I am very self-critical. I know when I’m performing well, when I’m not, when I’m helping my team, and when I’m not. When I sense it’s time to retire, I will do so without dwelling on age,” Messi stated.
“I understand that moment when I no longer feel prepared to give my best, when I’m no longer enjoying the game or supporting my teammates.”
