Adekunle Gold’s sophomore album, About 30 was a flawless body of work that offered us more than just good music to listen to. Thanks to it, a wider audience got to discover the gifted singer, Dyo, whose standout feature on “Down With You” blew everyone away.
It has been a while since Dyo released any music of her own — her talents have been enjoyed mostly through her songwriting for others — but now at last, she is out with a new single, and the stunning “Arena” was well worth the wait.
With writing credits on a plethora of global hits — from M.O.’s Mr Eazi-assisted “Bad Vibes” to Iggy Azaelea’s critically acclaimed “Bounce” — it’s doesn’t come as a shock that the songwriting on “Arena”, which sees Dyo take us through a captivating love, is so strong.
Co-produced by Jay Weathers and Parker Ighile, “Arena” is an immensely infectious tune, one that benefits from a captivating melody and Dyo’s strong vocals. The video is slightly more mellow than the track, set amidst an intimate gathering of old-school fashion enthusiasts.
Directed by Jolade Olusanya, the video depicts a chilled kickback hosted by Dyo. During her verses, the guests chatter amongst each other, but as Dyo leads us into the hook and chorus they break out into energetic dance, matching the crescendo up to the song’s effervescent climax.
