The recommendations of the Special Visitation Panel on the appointment of the 9th Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the Lagos State University have been accepted by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu (LASU).

For gross violations of the existing legislation governing the appointment of a VC, the governor ordered the dissolution of the Governing Council and the expulsion of the Pro-Chancellor and Council Chairman.

The second failed exercise to appoint the 9th Substantive Vice-Chancellor was canceled by Sanwo-Olu.

He cited gross violations of existing regulations, a lack of due process, and a failure to follow established criteria governing the procedure for the publicly publicized appointment.

A new Governing Council for LASU will be formed in due time, according to Gbenga Omotoso, Commissioner for Information.

“A new procedure for the appointment of the 9th Vice-Chancellor will be conducted by the reconstituted Council,” Omotoso stated.

Members of the Joint Council and Senate Committee who took part in the two failed attempts to designate a 9th Vice-Chancellor in 2020 and 2021 are exempt from participating in the VC appointment process again.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor and the University’s management were given orders to elect new Senate members to the council.

The Registrar and Secretary to Council have been asked to go on leave with immediate effect until the VC’s appointment is completed.

During the two failed elections in 2020 and 2021, the state government claimed they failed to caution the Joint Council and Senate Committee against making choices that were contrary to the law.

The new exercise will be overseen by an Acting Registrar, and the Acting VC will send a list of all LASU Deputy Registrars to Sanwo-Olu via the Surrogate Council (Special Adviser on Education) in order to nominate an Acting Registrar.

Following the Special Visitation Panel’s suggestion, the Governor would immediately establish a full Visitation Panel for Lagos State University, according to the statement.
