In what will come across as a really startling development, no less than four final-year cadets and a constable have gotten themselves into serious trouble.

According to Daily Trust, the cadets and constable were detained in the facility of the Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement (NDLEA) over alleged dealing in hard drugs.

The cadets are students at the Regular Course Three Cadets of the Nigeria Police Academy Wudil, Kano.

The cadets who are studying in the degree awarding police institution were arrested and handed over to NDLEA after a currier agent conveying the consignment containing the substance believed to be hard drugs was intercepted by the law enforcement agents at Kwanar Dangora, along Zaria expressway in Kiru local government area of Kano state.

The Commandant of the Academy, AIG Zanna M. Ibrahim, who disclosed this while addressing the matriculating cadets of Regular Course 7 on Thursday said investigations are still ongoing to establish the suspects’ culpability or otherwise.

He also disclosed that 25 cadets, including a female cadet have been dismissed from the institution over alleged indiscipline and gross misconduct.

He said the female cadet was dismissed over unwanted pregnancy.

He charged the matriculating cadets for discipline, emphasising that the academy has zero tolerance for any form of misconduct.

He said the academy would introduce drug and pregnancy tests to be conducted on regular bases on the cadets so as to ensure that only those fit physically and morally go through the rigour of training.

According to him, “We had an incident of pregnancy where a cadet has been dismissed and we don’t want a repeat of that. By the time the cadets go on holiday when they are come back we subject them to this tests to ensure they are fit and proper to continue with their academic programmes.

“Drug test, you must believe me that drug is the bane of the Nigerian youths today, you know drug addiction and drug abuse is very common among youth. Even the recent protest and the looting that followed was generated because of drug abuse.

“We want to make sure that our cadets are not involved this kind of unwholesome acts. At intervals we will subject them to those tests where we identify those who are into drugs, or female ones with unwanted pregnancies we show them the way out” he emphasised.

Zanna who is the first commandant product of the institution, warned the cadets to live above board by avoiding all forms of incriminating behaviour, such as theft, substance abuse, disobedience to lawful orders, examination malpractice, as well as social media hype and misdemeanor.

Over 1400 cadets, drawn from faculties of science and humanities, Law, social and management sciences were matriculated for studies in the institution.
