Last night, at the 61st Grammy Awards, a bunch of our faves picked up their first-ever Grammy, including Ibra Ake. The Nigerian-American visual artist won the award for ‘Best Music Video‘ for producing Childish Gambino’s viral “This Is America” clip.

Childish Gambino’s defining track won a total of four awards throughout the night. Alongside its ‘Best Music Video’ trophy, “This Is America” was hailed as the ‘Best Rap/Sung Performance’, the ‘Song of The Year’ and the ‘Record of the Year’.
Other winners of the night included “New Rules” singer, Dua Lipa for ‘Best New Artist’; Cardi B, who became the first female solo artist to win ‘Best Rap Album’ for her game-changing tape, Invasion of Privacy; and Drake’s “God’s Plan”, which won ‘Best Rap Song’.
Unfortunately, the talented Seun Kuti, the Nigerian act that we were all rooting for, didn’t end up winning ‘Best World Music Album’ like we were expecting. He lost out to Soweto Gospel Choir, who earned the award for their moving album, Freedom.
Still, a hearty congratulations to Ibra Ake and the rest of the team that brought us the vital music video for “This Is America”.
