Former Germany international and the current CEO of Bayern Munich, Karl Heinz Rummenigge, has harped on the need for leagues across the world to restart soon from the current hiatus occasioned by the Coronavirus pandemic for the wellbeing of football and clubs.
Rummenigge expresses his concern over the negative sporting and economic implications of a prolonged inaction of leagues across the globe.
While some leagues are weighing up different options to sort out their current 2019/2020 season, Bundesliga has planned to resume in early May and play the remainder of the season behind closed-door.
“We know that it is necessary to start again for two reasons;
the first is the sports one. You have to assign the title, know which team will participate in the cups, who will be demoted,” Rummenigge told Corriere dello Sport.

“The second, no less important, is economic. Here the televisions that broadcast the games have a strong impact on revenues.”
In Germany, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen who are the country’s current Champions League clubs have agreed to pool €20million together for the financially stringent Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 clubs.
Rummenigge added: “For 10 years, football has lived beyond its means and the clubs have taken all the risks.
“In such a difficult moment, balance sheets do not count as much as cash.
“The crisis is global, the solution must be shared. The field can limit the damage. FIFA and UEFA must improve their relations and act economically.”
