Paris 2024 Paralympics: Team Nigeria’s Mark Shatters Records, Wins Women’s Powerlifting Gold

Nigeria’s Onyinyechi Mark achieved a significant milestone on Friday, September 6, by winning gold in the women’s 61kg powerlifting category at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.

Mark’s victory set a new Paralympic record with an extraordinary lift of 150kg, surpassing the previous record held by fellow Nigerian, Lucy Ejike.

China’s Cui Jianjin lifted 140kg to secure the silver medal, while Mexico’s Amalia Pérez recorded 130kg to win bronze.

This victory further solidifies Nigeria’s strong legacy in Paralympic powerlifting. At the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, Nigeria claimed 10 medals, including four golds.

The country has consistently produced world-class athletes like Lucy Ejike and Bose Omolayo, who have set multiple world records and earned numerous gold medals.

Mark’s performance in Paris not only secured gold but also broke both the Paralympic and world records, reaffirming Nigeria’s dominance in the sport.
