It was Ighalo’s third goal in his second appearance in the Emirates FA Cup for United this season.
It is a record 30th Emirates semi-final appearance for United.
Ighalo broke the deadlock in the 51st minute, stabbing the ball past Tim Krul from close range after Luke Shaw’s cross was deflected towards him.
In the 76th minute Norwich equalised through Todd Cantwell who volleyed in from distance.
With two minutes remaining in the game Norwich were reduced to 10 men after Timm Klose was sent off for a challenge on Ighalo.
And with two minutes left in second half extra-time Harry Maguire scored the winner to send United into the last four.
The three other quarter-final fixtures will be decided on Sunday with Sheffield United hosting Arsenal, Leicester City entertaining Chelsea and Manchester City travelling to St James’ Park to face Newcastle United.
