Mike Obi’s retirement from international football got fans wondering who was going to take up the iconic number 10 shirt on the Nigeria team. Many fingers pointed to Alex Iwobi as the ideal candidate, while others thought the jersey number should go to Samuel Chuwueze.
Well, the Super Eagles are currently preparing for an international friendly against Ukraine, and, from the list released, it doesn’t look like either of those players will get it. Instead, we’re seeing a new name, Josh Maja, as the number 10 for the international friendly. So, who is he?
Maja is 20 years old and has been playing professional football since 2016. First, he played for Sunderland on their youth team before transitioning to a senior career, which saw him score 16 goals in 41 appearances for the club.
From being deservedly nominated for a ‘Player of the Month’ award last season, the striker moved to the French club, Bordeaux in January, and he has since managed to score two goals in ten appearances.
We can’t wait to see him in the match tonight as he works with other newly-invited players like Maduka Okoye, Dennis Bonaventure and Joe Aribo to give Ukraine their first defeat by an African country in the last seven years.
