The 2019 Africa Under-20 Cup of Nations is currently underway in Niger. Out of the eight teams competing to win the trophy, Nigeria has advanced to the knockout stage and by so doing, has qualified for the 2019 FIFA Under-20 World Cup.
With seven points, the Flying Eagles finished top of Group A after beating the hosts, Niger 1-0 on Friday. They would’ve become the first African team to secure a place in the global competition if South Africa hadn’t held them to a goalless draw in their second match.
The 2019 FIFA Under-20 World Cup, which is set to take place in Poland, will make it the 12th time the seven-time African champions make an appearance at the competition, having failed to qualify for the last edition in 2017.
So, while the players will be looking to become African champions this year, they’ll also be under pressure to reach the semifinals for the first time in the history of the Under-20 World Cup. The other African countries that have qualified include Senegal, South Africa and Mali.
