Nigeria is set to compete at the 2019 African Games, which was formerly known as All-Africa Games. Recently, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) listed 51 athletes who will represent the country, and we were thrilled to see that Divine Oduduru made the cut.
Since soaring in the US, the AFN has been making moves to get Oduduru to not dump Nigeria. When the 22-year-old didn’t make it to the 2019 All-Nigeria Track and Field Championships in July, we suspected that it had to do with the terrible treatment he has suffered in the country.
Despite all of that, it appears AFN has managed to convince him to fly Nigeria’s flag at the upcoming African Games in Morocco. But, as Punch reports, him saying yes came with the condition that his and other athletes’ allowances and training grants will be paid in full.
Well, considering that the Ministry of Sports recently threatened that any athlete who doesn’t compete at the African Games will not make it to the Olympics, we hope the athletes don’t show up simply to avoid being penalised — even though the AFN claims they’ve resolved all issues.
