Until a little while ago, not many Nigerians knew about curling, however, Tijani and Susana Cole changed the game as they started training to represent the country for the first time ever in the sport.
Now, it looks like their training has paid off, as the couple did Nigeria proud yesterday by winning their first ever game at the World Curling Championship in Norway.
From becoming the first Africans ever to participate in the championships, the curlers beat France 8-3 to become the first African curlers to win a game at the competition. This also puts Nigeria in the history books as the first African country to win a game at the World Curling Championship.
Although the victory was not enough for the team to qualify for the round of 16, it’s a huge reward for the tireless efforts and resources the Coles have put into the competition. Reacting to the win, Yahoo Sports quotes Tijani as saying:
“Nigeria we did it for you. I’m over over-the-top happy, elated, excited. All of our hard work has paid off. We did it.”
Hopefully, this victory will help expose curling to more Nigerians and boost the Nigeria Curling Federation’s (NCF) efforts in promoting the sport across the nation.
