Being a world-class professional footballer is no easy feat, as in addition to the pressure players face at club level, they don’t always make it as easily into their national teams.

It’s even harder when they hold dual citizenship, as is the case of William Troost-Ekong, who has just bared his frustrations and triumphs in his career so far in an enlightening new short documentary.

Titled Earned Not Given, the six-minute-long documentary follows the defender’s career right from when a coach told him he wasn’t good enough to play during his time at the Tottenham Hotspur Academy.

Of course, that would upset anyone, but Troost-Ekong managed to use it as motivation to work harder. Playing for FC Groningen in the Netherlands, Gent in Belgium, Haugesund in Norway, Bursaspor in Turkey and now Udinese in Italy, it’s fair to say that they’ve been proven wrong.

The documentary also reveals that his biggest break came last year when he played in an international friendly against England at Wembley Stadium – and since then, the 25-year-old has gone on to play in the World Cup and even lead the Super Eagles as captain.
