Newport goalkeeper Joe Day quickly put their famous win over Middlesbrough behind him as he sprinted off at the final whistle to be with his wife as she gave birth to twin girls.
The 28-year-old helped the League Two side deliver a huge upset – setting up an FA Cup fifth-round clash with Manchester City – before running into the Rodney Parade dressing room to dash off to be with his new family.
Day rushed away to join his wife – with manager Michael Flynn’s praise for his “professionalism” ringing in his ears – who gave birth to baby girls during the first half and half-time of Tuesday night’s tie.
A picture shared on Twitter put the birth times at 8.13 and 8.35 – with the game kicking off at 7.45.
The club posted a tweet yesterday morning congratulating the stopper and revealing mum Lizzie and the girls are “all healthy and looking forward to the fifth round”.
Flynn had earlier praised Day for staying focused on the game, saying: “The professional he is, he turned his phone off. I didn’t hide it, believe it or not, he turned his phone off.
“As soon as the game was over and we’d won, he said thank you so much gaffer, ‘can I go please?’ I said, ‘of course you can, do you need a lift?’.”
