Back in the day, it seemed like just about everything out of Nollywood was a horror film, presenting traditional worship and juju as possibly the scariest thing under the sun.

Well, new short film, Call Me By My Name definitely plays to this, as it presents traditional worship to us in a modern day setting, tackling topics such as childhood trauma, infidelity, sex work and toxic masculinity.

Directed by Bolaji Kekere-Ekun, the thrilling short follows a troubled police detective who is trying to solve a murder. As the film goes on, we become privy to his dangerous misogyny, as he physically and sexually assaults the deceased’s wife he is questioning.

Unbeknownst to him, she possesses supernatural powers, which she uses to rehash the childhood trauma he faced after his mother abandoned him. The short film is as scary as it is nuanced, breaking down toxic masculinity and punishing each man for their wrongdoings.
