Former Nigeria international Ifeanyi has said poor substitutions from Jose Peseiro almost cost the Super Eagles qualification to the 2023 AFCON.

A brace from Victor Osimhen saw the Eagles race to a 2-0 lead before Mustapha Bundu pulled a goal back for Sierra Leone.

In the 71st minute Peseiro made three changes, bringing on Kevin Akpoguma, Frank Onyeka and Kelechi Iheanacho for Joe Aribo, Bright Osayi-Samuel and Joe Aribo.

Despite making the changes it was Sierra Leone who got on the score sheet as Augustus Kargbo made it 2-2 with six minutes left.

However, Iheanacho scored the winner in the 95th minute to secure qualification.

The win saw the Eagles go top in Group A and secure the ticket for next year’s tournament.

Reflecting on the game, Udeze faulted Peseiro for the manner in which he went about his substitutions which almost backfired.

“For me he made changes that were not necessary, he made three changes at once which for me was not necessary,” Udeze said on Brila FM.

“Those kind of changes is when you are down and you need fresh legs you can make three or four changes at once.

“You are leading and making three, four changes at once was necessary except when a player indicate he’s tired or injured then you can make the changes. For me those kind of changes doesn’t make sense.“
