Actions continue in this year’s edition of the Higher Institutions Football League tournament as the matches for the first leg of the semifinal stage of the competition were played this week in both Borno and Enugu.

On Wednesday in Maiduguri, University of Maiduguri Men’s football team, UNIMAID Desert Warriors defeated FUTMINNA Transformers of Federal University of Technology Minna by one goal to zero thanks to Bukar David’s 78th minute strike from the spot kick.
Meanwhile, this year’s underdog AAUA Luminaries of Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba which is the last standing team from South West region of Nigeria at the tournament continued their impressive form after picking a vital away goal advantage in Enugu.
The second game of semifinal between University of Nigeria, Nsukka football team, UNN Lions and AAUA Luminaries ended in draw at the UNN Sports Complex on Thursday.
It wasn’t long into the match when Akinlosootu Ayomide put the visitor ahead with a low range shot in the 11th minute of the encounter.
However, eleven minutes later, the Luminaries were punished after Chinegwu Obinna capitalized on a defensive error from their defenders.
UNN Lions were dominant for the most parts of the encounter but match ended one-one in Enugu and AAUA Luminaries got the important away-goal advantage.

The return leg of the matches are scheduled to be played next week, 22nd of September in Akungba, Ondo state and Minna, Niger state.
