The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has disclosed that it is yet to take delivery of Madagascar’s herbal drugs against COVID-19 brought into the country recently.

The Director-General of the agency, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, stated this during an interview on Tuesday.

Naija News recalls President Muhammadu Buhari received Madagascar’s herbal mixture for the treatment of the Coronavirus patients on Saturday, 16th May as disclosed in a statement issued by Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity.

NAFDAC then gave assurances that it will provide accelerated lab analysis for the Madagascar herbal cure for COVID-19 once it receives it.

The agency declared that the product would be subjected to the normal testing procedure but that the process would be fast-tracked.

However, the NAFDAC boss, Prof Adeyeye while speaking on Tuesday during TVC’s ‘Your View’ programme disclosed the agency is yet to receive the drugs.

She added that Nigeria will also continue its clinical trials for the use of Chloroquine in treating the coronavirus despite the recent warning by the World Health Organization (WHO) to discontinue clinical trials for the drug.

“There is data to prove that hydroxychloroquine worked for many COVID-19 patients. Therefore, we would continue our own clinical trials in Nigeria. Hydroxychloroquine has been proved to work at a mild stage. So the potency depends on the severity of the disease in the patient’s body.

“If medical doctors, research scientists, pharmacists, herbal experts work together, we should conclude the clinical trial in three to four months. The narrative might change afterward but for now, we believe in hydroxychloroquine,” Adeyeye said.
