The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) says 191 suspects have been arrested in connection with criminal activities during the coronavirus lockdown in Lagos and Ogun States.
KanyiDaily had reported that cases of robbery in the two states have increased in the last few days with residents of the states forming vigilante groups and making bonfires to survive each day.
In a statement on Monday, the Inspector-General of Police, Muhammed Adamu, ordered the deployment of additional intelligence and operational assets of the Force to Lagos and Ogun to strengthen security in the areas where hoodlums had held sway in the last few days.
“A total of 191 suspects have been arrested in Lagos and Ogun States in connection with the incidents. The following exhibits, 15 locally-made guns, 52 live cartridges, 42 cutlasses and axes and a large quantity of weeds suspected to be marijuana have been recovered from the hoodlums by the Police team in the Agbado, Ifo, Ota, and Agege axis.
“The IGP assures the citizens that the police will not sit idly by and allow activities of a few criminals to disrupt the peace and security of the country.
“He commends Nigerians for their steadfastness, patience, perseverance, and vigilance at this critical time,” the Force stated.
Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has extended the coronavirus lockdown in Lagos, Ogun and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) by another 14 days.
