More than 300,000 cases of new coronavirus have been identified worldwide since the start of the pandemic, according to a count made by AFP from official sources Sunday at 9 am GMT
At least 300,097 cases of infection, including 12,895 deaths, have been detected in 169 countries and territories, notably in China (81,054 cases, of which 3,261 died), the cradle of the pandemic, and in Italy (53,578 cases). , the hardest-hit country with 4,825 dead. The number of cases diagnosed, however, only reflects a fraction of the actual number of infections, with a large number of countries now testing only those cases requiring hospitalization.
Meanwhile, an inmate from a New York federal prison has tested positive for the coronavirus, making it the first confirmed case in the federal prison system in the United States.
The detainee, who is imprisoned at the Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Center, complained of chest pain Thursday, a few days after arriving at the facility, the Federal Prisons Office told The Associated Press. He was taken to a local hospital and tested for COVID-19, officials said.
