The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have discovered a large farm of Indian hemp inside Lake City Secondary School, Nri, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State.
NSCDC officials also arrested a 45-year-old man, Amobi Okafor, who is suspected to be the owner of the farm.
The Anambra State NSCDC Commandant, Mr David Bille, disclosed this during a press conference in Awka on Tuesday, February 18, 2020.
According to him, the suspect was arrested for cutting a security guard with a machete in the school during an altercation following the discovery that he cultivated the weed in a large expanse of land in the school compound.
““Following credible intelligence report, operatives of the NSCDC arrested one Amobi Okafor ‘m’ aged 45 from Uruofo village, Nri, Anaocha LGA Anambra State.
“The suspect was arrested at about 12pm for allegedly attacking and injuring one Mathias Ajoagu, a 71-year-old security guard at Lake City Secondary School.
“The suspect confessed to the crime and took the NSCDC operatives to the location where the cannabis is being planted yearly.
“Exhibits recovered from him included a machete, fresh leaves suspected to be cannabis sativa and other incriminating items.”
Billie said the corps had commenced investigation to ascertain how the suspect came about cultivating the illegal substance in the compound, adding that the suspect would be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency to face the law.
NSCDC officials had also arrested two fishermen who were allegedly trying to smuggle 120 jerricans filled with petroleum products to Benin Republic.
